Forge your own Japanese style kitchen Knife In just one Day!

This one-day knife-making experience offers a well-rounded introduction to the art of bladesmithing through crafting your own Japanese-style kitchen knife. Students will forge and grind their own blade, then complete it by fitting a traditional Japanese “Wa” handle. The steel provided is a san-mai construction with a choice of stainless-steel or iron cladding. The steel used is imported from Japan and specifically designed for high-end kitchen knives.

Important information

  • The courses will run from 08:30 - 5pm on Saturdays with a break for lunch.

  • The class size will be kept small with only a maximum of four students at a time. This allows for plenty of Will’s time and helps keep the project moving at a steady pace.

  • I will not supply lunch itself but will shower you with a good selection of tea, coffee, soft drinks and water, along with a selection of snacks.

  • I will supply all the necessary safety equipment but please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. The forge can get cold so keep this in mind and don't wear your favourite swagger as it is quite possible that you end up with a few holes as a reminder of the experience.

  • Keep in mind that although knife making is not a dangerous activity as such, it is not without its risks of injury to yourself - mainly small cuts or burns. However, I am very experienced at working with students of all ages and abilities so will give you a high level of support to keep the risks to a minimum.

  • The courses are available to anyone over the age of 18 but I am happy to work with a student under that age as long as they are accompanied by a competent adult who will take parental responsibility. Why not have a parent and child experience and give your dearest the opportunity to try out this wonderful craft at an early age?

  • Private tuition is available so please contact me if this is something you are interested in.

  • Although we are unable to offer any accommodation ourselves there are plenty of local options and we are happy to give you our recommendations should you require.
